THE POWER OF THE DOG - Thomas Savage

First published in 1969, Thomas Savage’s novel is a tense and gripping tale of two joint ranch owners and brothers, in the American West of the 1920s. Polar opposites by nature, when one brother marries, the other attempts to destroy his brother’s wife leading to a devastating and unexpected dénouement.

The landscape of the American frontier is powerfully described by Savage in vivid and compelling prose. The intense descriptions of nature find their visual counterpart in the black and white photographs of Montana by Jay Wesler that are used on the cover and endpapers.

This classic western had been all but forgotten but is published by Vintage on February 4th, with an afterward by Annie Proulx who describes the book as ‘a work of literary art’.

THE NOISE OF TIME - Julian Barnes

Vladimir Zimakov was commissioned to create a linocut for the cover of The Noise of Time. Here he describes how he went about creating the figure.

“For the cover image of the “Noise of Time”, the goal was to capture the essence of the time period that the book takes place at, as well as the personality of the main character. In addition to looking online at posters and propaganda images form the mid 20th century USSR, I started digging through my collection of stamps and matchbox covers that I brought with me from Russia. The visuals spoke volumes about the times of danger and uncertainty, the times of hard decisions and compromises. Visually, one of the main challenges was to combine the delicate features of Shostakovich’s face with this raw and iconic Soviet imagery.”

The Noise of Time is published today, 28th January

THE GREEN ROAD - Anne Enright

Hannah, Dan, Constance and Emmet Madigan return to spend one last Christmas with their mother Rosaleen in their family home on the west coast of Ireland before the house is sold. Their reunion forces them to confront the weight of family ties and the road that brought them home,

The cover photograph was uncovered by our picture researcher in a pile of negatives of old family photographs kept in her attic, and she was able to make a print in the dark room. Then with some creative Photoshop by the designer the photograph was edited to achieve the right combination of children to match the Madigan siblings. The final touch was to add some colour.

Anne Enright’s bold and often painfully funny novel is published now in Vintage paperback.

PURE JULIET - Stella Gibbons

While Stella Gibbons was celebrated for her beloved bestseller Cold Comfort Farm, the manuscript for Pure Juliet lay unseen and forgotten until it was brought to light by her family in 2014, and it is published this week for the first time by Vintage Classics.

No one knows what to make of Juliet Slater, not even her mother. Clothes, boys, school, friends, the change in seasons and what other people think - none of this matters to Juliet. She spends her time in her room with incomprehensible mathematical textbooks, her mind voyaging in strange seas of thought alone. Is she a genius? It might take the rest of her life to find out.

This is a treat for fans of this witty, insightful and always surprising author.

The cover was illustrated by Chris Silas Neal, you can see more of his work here.

NIK COHN - Awopbopaloobopalopbamboom

Nik Cohn began writing this book in the late 1960′s with a simple purpose – to capture the feel, the pulse of Rock Music during this era. The result was that he created and perfected a new form of journalism – rock criticism.

Our cover is an homage to the spirit of this cultural melting pot, offering an illustrative nod to some of the key artists and works discussed by Nik.

So – enjoy the cover, read the book and listen to the music!

Chatto and Windus published this little gem back in April this year, but we thought it fun to see how other publishers in Europe had interpreted the cover.

THE POPPY FACTORY

To mark Remembrance Day, we would like to share some photos from our recent visit to The Poppy Factory in Richmond, London. As well as making the famous poppies that have become synonymous with Remembrance Day, they are also the country’s leading employment charity for veterans with health conditions or impairments. We found the day to be as inspiring as it was uplifting; here’s a little of what we saw.

Brian Love, from The Poppy Factory gave us a talk and kindly gave us a tour, to see the work they do there. Our cover for the Vintage Classic ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ by Erich Maria Remarque features a very early poppy from the Brian Love Collection.

BRONTE SPECIAL EDITIONS

To mark the bicentenary of the birth of Charlotte Brontë in 2016, Vintage is today publishing one novel by each of the famous Brontë sisters: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë, and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë.

Each book features the work of artist Sarah Gillespie. Her work beautifully and perfectly complements that of the Brontës across the centuries. Sarah writes of revealing “a world of dancing atoms and temporal fragility, of moths, blossom, hares and birds, whose cycles of life and death so often remain invisible to human eyes, hidden within the enormity of the landscape or the dark of night, such as the Brontë sisters knew.”

More work by this remarkable artist can be seen on her website www.sarahgillespie.co.uk

CITY ON FIRE - Garth Risk Hallberg

Much like the fireworks on the cover, City on Fire has exploded in the media since being published last week. It hit number 5 on the New York Times bestseller list and garnered rave reviews.

We particularly like The Guardian newspaper’s interview with the author Garth Risk Hallberg, which you can find here.

The picture of Garth reading an extract from the book was taken at his launch last week.
