MOTHER ISLAND - Bethan Roberts

How does it feel to come home from work one evening and find your two-year-old son gone?  How does it feel to steal another woman’s child?
This is the story of two women, joined by old family history and by love for the same little boy.

A tense, psychological drama about the fraught relationship of the two main characters requires a striking two-sided book jacket.

INVISIBLE - Philip Ball

The invisible is one of the most enduringly seductive ideas in human history. This is its biography.

The subject gave us the opportunity to have some fun with the cover and to play with the idea of the unseen by keeping the title subtle, picked out only by its shadows. Removing the white jacket reveals a contrasting black version of the design, printed onto the boards.

THE ZHIVAGO AFFAIR – Peter Finn and Petra Couvée

“You are hereby invited to watch me face the firing squad.” – Boris Pasternak’s words on handing over his manuscript to his Italian Publisher’s representative in the Soviet Union.

This tells the story of a forbidden book, one that becomes a secret CIA weapon in the ideological battle between East and West. The story of how Pasternak’s masterpiece – banned in the USSR – is secretly translated into Russian by the CIA, printed in the Hague and distributed to Soviet tourists via a secret Vatican library. Copies are later found in a Russian fairground with their covers torn off and discarded in an attempt to conceal the pages from watching KGB.

The cover design references this scene and contains the stamp which classifies the text as ‘to be held under absolute KGB embargo’.

Until now, the CIA has never acknowledged its role in the printing of Doctor Zhivago however the agency has agreed to open its classified files exclusively for this book.

It is published by Harvill secker in July 2014.

COLD BLOOD - Richard Kerridge

‘What might it be like to be cold blooded, to sleep through the winter, to shed your skin and taste wafting chemicals on your tongue?’

Part natural-history guide to these animals, part passionate nature writing, and part personal story, Cold Blood is an original and perceptive memoir about our relationship with nature.

For the cover we wanted to celebrate the beauty of nature and these fascinating creatures. We tried many different animals before deciding on our final newt, which was found amongst the Dorling Kindersley collection from Getty Images. The final photograph works its way across the cover and is spot varnished to help give the newt a more tactile feel.

All the Birds Singing - Evie Wyld

The paperback cover for Evie Wyld’s hugely impressive second novel could be seen as purely decorative, however the design also alludes to a significant scene in the story.

The cyclical form of the narrative itself is also echoed in the book format, with the jacket flaps opening out to reveal a repeated, overlapping pattern.

Designed and illustrated in house with photography by Sophie BroadbridgeAll the Birds, Singing will be published by Vintage in May.

THE KNOWLEDGE - Lewis Dartnell

Maybe it was a viral pandemic, or an asteroid strike, or perhaps nuclear war. Whatever the cause, the world as we know it has ended and you and the other survivors must start again.

Published by The Bodley Head, The Knowledge is a book which explains everything you need to know about everything. It is a quickstart guide for rebooting civilisation which will transform your understanding of the world – and help you prepare for when its no longer here…

Shot here in our basement at Vauxhall Bridge Road, we made our very own ‘break glass in case of emergency’ box specifically for the shoot, sourcing tempered glass that would fragment into tiny pieces when smashed and give an authentic look.

Cover photography by John Carey.

THE COUNTRY OF ICE CREAM STAR - Sandra Newman

In the ruins of a future America, fifteen-year-old Ice Cream Star and her people survive by scavenging in the detritus of an abandoned civilization. By the time they reach twenty, each of them will die from a disease they call posies.

When her brother sickens, Ice Cream sets out on the trail of a cure. It’s a quest that will lead her to love and heartbreak, to captivity and to a nation’s throne, and ultimately into a war that threatens to doom everyone she loves.

Designed in-house, the jacket had to be bold, powerful and optimistic to reflect this novel’s spirited heroine.

THE DEVILS’ ALLIANCE - Roger Moorhouse

For nearly two years the two most infamous dictators in twentieth-century history were in alliance. Their Pact stunned the world when it was announced, the War was launched under its auspices with the invasion and division of Poland, it lasted for nearly a third of the duration of the War, and its eventual collapse led to the defining and deciding clash of the War.

The design was inspired by the bold and simple iconography of Nazi and Soviet WWII propaganda posters.
