THE NOISE OF TIME - Julian Barnes
Vladimir Zimakov was commissioned to create a linocut for the cover of The Noise of Time. Here he describes how he went about creating the figure.
“For the cover image of the “Noise of Time”, the goal was to capture the essence of the time period that the book takes place at, as well as the personality of the main character. In addition to looking online at posters and propaganda images form the mid 20th century USSR, I started digging through my collection of stamps and matchbox covers that I brought with me from Russia. The visuals spoke volumes about the times of danger and uncertainty, the times of hard decisions and compromises. Visually, one of the main challenges was to combine the delicate features of Shostakovich’s face with this raw and iconic Soviet imagery.”
