THE POWER OF THE DOG - Thomas Savage
First published in 1969, Thomas Savage’s novel is a tense and gripping tale of two joint ranch owners and brothers, in the American West of the 1920s. Polar opposites by nature, when one brother marries, the other attempts to destroy his brother’s wife leading to a devastating and unexpected dénouement.
The landscape of the American frontier is powerfully described by Savage in vivid and compelling prose. The intense descriptions of nature find their visual counterpart in the black and white photographs of Montana by Jay Wesler that are used on the cover and endpapers.
This classic western had been all but forgotten but is published by Vintage on February 4th, with an afterward by Annie Proulx who describes the book as ‘a work of literary art’.
